Introduction to Beekeeping

BoCC is educating anyone interested in honey bees and beekeeping!

Beginning January 2023 we will offer an introductory course where you will:

* Be invited to join our dynamic beekeeping

community.

* Be invited to participate in hands-on Field

Days at our Teaching Apiary and Outdoor

Classroom.

* Be prepared to set-up your own apiary.

* Be supported by experienced local

beekeepers.

* Be prepared to over winter your own bees at

the end of your first year as a beekeeper.

* Be prepared to pass the certification exams

to become a North Carolina State

Beekeepers Association Certified

Experienced beekeepers and mentors of BoCC will provide instruction and training for the beginner beekeeper on five consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm beginning January 31, 2023 to February 28, 2023.

Classroom instruction will be held at College of the Albemarle - Edenton-Chowan Campus located at 118 Blades St., Edenton, NC 27932.

A hands-on Apiary Field Day will be held at BoCC’s Teaching Apiary & Outdoor Classroom for all 2023 bee school students. The Apiary Field Day will include woodenware construction demonstrations and suiting up in proper PPE to work the club’s bees. Date & time TBA, weather permitting.

Membership to Beekeepers of Chowan County and the NC State Beekeepers Association (NCSBA) are included in each student’s $45 registration fee. To simplify administration & increase flexibility, the cost of the required textbook is not included in tuition. Instead, textbooks can be purchased on-line from a variety of vendors or at a bee supply store. Our textbook this year is The Beekeeper’s Handbook 5th Edition (2021) by Diana Sammataro amd Alphonse Avitabile.
